Inspiration: Master Bedroom, Creating a relaxing space!
A ski chalet was my initial starting point for my inspiration.

I have been so excited to get this project off the ground!
For the last 18 months, Euan and I have been sleeping in what was my 6 year old little boys room with half ripped robot wallpaper greeting my eyes every morning. My bedroom has just not felt like our own space for quite a while now and it has literally become some kind of dumping ground. Washing, toys, stuff that is half way between going into the attic and getting chucked somehow has been landing in our room.
There has been some positives in it though, during that time it has given me a clear idea of what I want for our bedroom. Although it is not that large, we have to be cautious of the storage and how we use it for clothes. Getting ready in the mornings is interesting with a young 18 month old little girl trying to steal all your make up, so that was another important factor to consider for me.

I first started to think about designing our bedroom when I was in a state of calm. We have been so busy the last few years, it just wasn’t something I was making a priority. However, when my husband treated us both to a spa day at the Archerfiled Spa on my birthday. The moment I entered the spa, I knew I wanted to recreate the kind of feeling I had when I was walking around the space and to have this in my bedroom. To have that feeling first thing in the morning and last thing at night would be amazing.

Soft Furnishings & Furniture
I wanted to create a space with lots of tactile textures, soft blankets, faux fur cushions, no clashing patterns that play on the brain, using a neutral palette of creams and golds.
We need to replace all of our furniture, so I have sold our old stuff on gumtree and I am looking at the furniture laid out on the mood board below. All soft and light tones. Previously we had very boxy sets of side drawers which made the room feel even smaller so with the introduction of a super king size bed you can imagine having some thing like that again would only make the bedroom even smaller. So I wanted to get something with long legs, allowing for air to flow underneath the furniture. Raising furniture off the floor gives the illusion of space and believe me in this space we need plenty of illusion.

Paint Application
I knew I didn’t want to use wall paper and simply stick with paint. From resarching on instagram I have been inspired by @myhomemythings living room and how she had applied her paint half way up the wall like a dado rail. So I thought I would apply it as a picto rail in our room - to make the room appear bigger. We have quite a small room with an awkward single cupboard, so we have to be careful with how much “stuff” we put in the space. I really like the colours from Farrow and Ball, so I will be looking to them for some inspiration.

Storage
I might of already mentioned but our room is a weird shape and it only has one storage cupboard.
Unfortunately, we gave Mylo the bedroom with the double wardrobe to host some of his toys as it is our plan one day to move up into the attic and use that as our master bedroom. We currently have to house some of our clothes in his room aswell. We have created additional storage in the attic so the clothes we keep in our bedroom will strictly be by season!
In the 15 years that I have beeb with Euan we have only ever slept in a double bed. I am 5ft 9 and Euan is 6ft…so not a great combination. So getting a super king ottoman bed for additional storage will be utter luxury for us. We need to be clever with storage so here are a couple of ideas of what I plan on using!
Superking Duvin Ottoman storage bed
Using a Duvin storage bed that will open from the side will allow us to change the headboard as and when if we want to in the future. We had a fixed frame before and I just found the it to be so bulky. It also means that the thickness of the frame is another thing you have to consider when putting it up against the wall which I won’t have to worry about with the bed we are now considering.
A dressing table is a must so having an ottoman storage stool will be deal for hiding all my hair stuff - hairdryer, straighteners, tongs etc. I love this storage stool that I found on amazon!

Artwork
I am hoping that we will be able to create some of our own artwork for the space aswell as get some small new pieces for interest. I have a lot of photographs from our travels over the years and when I look at them they make me feel relaxed as I go straight back to that place.. I am hoping that we can perhaps do some digital graphics but this is still something I need to explore with Euan.
Lighting
I want the lighting in our room to be both functional and mood setting. I need the lighting to work so that I can see my make up when I am putting it on swell as be able to have low lighting when we both want to relax in the evening, but light enough to be able to read etc.
With the introduction of wardrobes I think it will be the perfect opportunity to add back lighting to these. Something similar to below but lighting from behind the wardrobe. I am currently looking at IKEAs PAX wardrobe system
It will be through the lighting at the side of the bed that I will introduce brass lighting. I have already purchased the Nordlux Grant Brass Lamp as it was something Euan and I instantly agreed on!
Accessories
This is the exciting part for me. I can’t wait to get some nice accessories to showcase some of my perfumes, places for my jewellery and finally areas where Euan can store his own clothing accessories , belts, cuff links etc. All things which at the moment are stored in places where they get shoved because we have never given them a place. Like this mirrored tray from Oliver Bonas where I will put my perfumes. Or this agate gold leafed coaster from Anthropologie which will just set any candle off when it on in the room!
This is just a little of what is to come. The key to this bedroom, is that it will be a space for us both to enjoy. We are hoping to get this completed in the next few weeks so please stay tuned for a before and after! You will be excited to see the difference…I know I can’t wait.
